The Declaration of Independence may be regarded as Thomas Jefferson's most famous accomplishments. He authored this document to declare the United States of America a separate nation from Great Britain a year into the American Revolution. He was a member among the Committee of Five, also including Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, Robert Livingston, and Roger Sherman. This committee was selected from the first Constitutional Convention to write a document to declare the 13 colonies independent from their mother country, and Thomas Jefferson was selected from the committee to write the document.

The main attraction of this room in The Thomas Jefferson Museum Exhibit is an exact copy, word for word, of The Declaration of Independence. This document is an exact copy of the original, which is currently held at the Rotunda for the Charters of Freedom in Washington D.C. The copy has been printed to look exactly like the original document, with the only difference being that we have restored the words, so the document is now legible. There is a button next to it that will read you the document from the beginning to end, if you would rather listen than read the Declaration. Also, along the walls are in depth explanations of the Declaration of Independence, in case you are confused as to what a certain line or phrase means.
Also, at the very entrance of this room is a life sized statue of Thomas Jefferson the way he would have looked when he had signed the Declaration of Independence. A plaque at his feet tells about all the achievements he would experience and give to his country, America.
