His Death and Legacy
Thomas Jefferson died on July 4, 1836. It is unknown exactly how or why he died, although he most likely died due to various ailments such as: Toxemia, Uremia, and Pneumonia. The day before he died, Jefferson was overcome with fever and was so frail that he did not attend the 50th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence in Washington D.C. On July 4, 1826 he died at 12:50 AM. Jefferson wrote his own gravestone before he died; it stated, " Here was buried Thomas Jefferson author of the Declaration of American Independence, of the stature of Virginia for Religious Freedom, and Father of the University of Virginia".
He lead a large and fulfilling life. He wished to only be remembered as the writer of the Declaration of Independence and founding the University of Virginia. He has, however, become remembered for much more than that. Jefferson is remembered for being Secretary of State, founding the former Democratic-Republican Party, and being Vice President under John Adams. But most of all, he is remembered for being the 3rd President of the United States of America.
